The Main Goal Of An Artist - 1390 Words

Similar to all great writers and innovators, the main goal of an artist is to spark a creative perspective in the audience. Sarah Ruhl’s oddly blunt play, Eurydice, was meant to open up our minds and create an outlook that has never been achieved before. Her intent was to keep us on our toes and read between the lines in order to find the hidden truths in each line. The simplicity of the script was meant to be a little strange and dull, but by doing this Ruhl entered a realm of playwriting that has not been accomplished before. Usually, in the performances we watch we are bombarded with long, complex sentences that leave the audience confused. The vocabulary used is always either outdated or too complicated for many people to understand quickly. However, in this place Ruhl took the opposite approach and chose short and simple sentences, leaving more room for interpretation. By making each line somewhat awkward and dull, Ruhl engages the audiences attention in order to m ake sense of the words. Many factors could have motivated Ruhl to write her play in such fashion. For example, when I was reading the play I connected her style of writing to artists and poets of the 1960’s, like Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison, who had such a beautiful yet simple play on words. Her outlandish sentences probably made no sense to someone with a closed mind, this related directly to how the Dylan and Morrison were perceived in their time as well.
